BMW recently invited me to Buriram to attend the Asia Driving Challenge 2023. It was an action-packed day filled with non-stop automotive joy, being able to experience a myriad of BMW cars on and off track. However, one particular station stood out to me, so unorthodox that it was frankly genius. I’m of course referring to the Dirt Gymkhana station featuring the BMW iX.

The i4 is BMW’s first EV saloon, but is it worth a look compared to its other four-door rivals?


Ok, so it isn’t a full-fat M car like the M3 or M5, but rather a warmed-over M Performance model, like the M340i and M440i. Hence the double digit number in the M badge, and the demure bodywork. Still, with the ease with which electric drivetrains develop power, the i4 M50 is the brawniest model in the 3/4 Series range… For a very short while at least. One of its driving modes is called Sport Boost, which unlocks the car’s full 400kW/544hp and 795Nm of torque for up to 10 seconds at a time, a fair bit more than the M3 and M4 Competition’s 510hp and 650Nm. Otherwise, the i4 M50 normally puts out 350kW/476hp, and 730Nm.

What to look out for when planning your electric adventure.


When it comes to the latter, the entry version known as the i4 eDrive40, when fully-charged, is capable of a range of up to 590km. Timely, considering that Singapore drivers will be able to drive into Malaysia without restrictions again from April 1st. With such a range, the i4 should be able to be driven to Kuala Lumpur without any problems. It is also reassuring to know that Shell has a network of 180kW high-speed chargers along the North-South Expressway in Malaysia just in case the i4 or any other EV needs a quick juice-up. Powered by a 250kW (340hp) and 430Nm electric motor that drives the rear wheels, this enables this EV to accelerate to 100km/h from a standstill in 5.7 seconds.

Premiering in September 2017 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, the refreshed BMW i3 and new BMW i3s enable drivers to enjoy locally emission-free mobility with the added benefit of instantaneous power delivery. Both models draw their energy from a 33 kWh lithium-ion high-voltage battery (an increase from the original i3’s 22 kWh battery), offering a range of up to 300 km. The emotional design of the BMW i8 Concept, which is on display in Singapore, ensures its qualities are clear for all to see. Its dynamic proportions give the BMW i8 Concept the appearance of surging forward before it even turns a wheel and lend visual form to its extraordinary performance. The sophisticated concept behind the upward-swiveling doors fixed to the A-pillars underlines the car’s sporting capability and opens up access to the front and rear seats at the same time. A series of air inlets allow the air to flow through and around the vehicle to optimum effect, ensuring extremely low drag. They also add visual emphasis to these advanced aerodynamics. Airflow plays an extremely important role at the rear of the vehicle as well. Intakes behind the passenger cell and at the rear provide a cooling flow of air through the engine compartment, while outlets in the rear diffuser and the flow of air around the rear wheels ensure the car is extremely efficient in terms of lift and down force at both axles. The BMW i8, meanwhile, is designed from the outset as a plug-in hybrid sports car, with the emphasis on agile performance and outstanding efficiency. All-electric BMW i3 Makes South East Asia Preview

BMW Asia recently showcased the production-ready all-electric BMW i3 and the BMW i8 Concept sports car at the BMW i: The Future of Mobility, Singapore Showcase 2013.


The first fruit borne of this effort is the little i3 electric city car. And we do mean little — at 3,999 mm in length, 1,775 mm in width and 1,578 mm in height, the i3 is 326 mm shorter, 10 mm wider and 158 mm taller than BMW’s smallest model, the 1-Series. Unlike most EVs, it’s light too. Thanks to an aluminium chassis, and the world’s first mass produced carbonfibre-reinforced-plastic (CFRP) monocoque body, the i3 weighs in at a relatively paltry 1,195 kg. This means that fewer batteries are required to provide propulsion for the car, which has the knock-on effect of reducing weight further still. The inherent strength of carbonfibre also means that the i3 can afford to do without a B-pillar, combining with the suicide rear doors to make a massive aperture.

After a fairly short gestation period since its initial unveiling in 2011, the final production version of BMW’s i3 city car has been revealed.


So what did BMW do to improve on the excellent 5-er? As with any self respecting German Automaker, BMW added more luxurious features and a lot more power to the car. The turbocharged V8 in the 550i makes 45 bhp more than the outgoing 5-er. The extra power means that the car is capable of launching itself towards the horizon and hit 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds, which is not too far off what the M5 can achieve. All engines are mated to an eight-speed auto, although a six-speed manual is offered as a no cost option on some models. Keeping in tune with downsizing trends, BMW has inserted a new, entry-level diesel powerplant in the F10 shell. The turbocharged 2.0-liter 4 cylinder in the 518d produces 143 bhp and 360 Nm of torque.
